Product
- What does octoBox do, How is it used (List primary applications)
- The octoBox test station provides controlled environment over the air (OTA) testing of conventional and MIMO wireless devices. Top
- What the product’s three most important benefits?
-
- Easily customizable for a variety for DUT (device under test) formfactors and their unique radiation fields, refrigerator-sized octoBox RF test station provides stable and repeatable OTA test conditions typically requiring a large anechoic chamber.
- With its dual-chamber design in a vertically stacked formfactor, the octoBox houses both test equipment and the DUT, forming a self-contained test station that fits into tight spaces in a lab or in an engineer’s cubicle. Superior isolation of the octoBox allows multiple workstations to be placed in close proximity with no concern for interference.
- Supporting a wide frequency range from UHF to 6 GHz, the octoBox is ideal for testing multi-radio smartphones, with radios including cellular, 3G/4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, all operating in different regions of the spectrum. Its DUT shelf and test antenna arrangement can be easily optimized for a variety of products including smartphones, access points, base stations, laptop computers, cameras and other such equipment.

- Are there additional important benefits? If so, list below
- OctoScope offers RF and wireless technology consulting services to customize octoBox for optimum signal stability and repeatable measurements. OctoScope can also integrate test instrumentation, including multipath fading channel emulation, RF sensing, data monitoring and interference generation. Top
- What are the four most important features of the product? Describe in detail.
-
- OctoBox has 2 chambers isolated from each other and from the outside environment. One chamber is intended for test instrumentation or a partner device communicating with the DUT. The other chamber contains the DUT and test antennas.
- Superior isolation supports close proximity of octoBox test stations with no interference between them. Isolation is sufficient to allow measuring performance of extremely sensitive GPS receivers.
- Far-field conditions down to UHF frequencies with ample absorption to dampen reflections, providing uniform and stable OTA signal for repeatable measurements.
- Roadmap includes automated 3D antenna field measurements and support for MIMO OTA channel emulation methodology being developed by 3GPP and CTIA.
Top
- Are there any additional important features? If so, list below.
-
- OctoBox comes with configurable feed-through filters for all copper lines entering the box, including power, Ethernet, USB and other control/communications lines connecting to the DUT or to the test instrumentation. Filtering contributes to the unsurpassed isolation of octoBox even when it is configured with a fully cabled test setup.
- OctoBox is carefully designed with right-angle seals and with groove-fit easy-to-replace gasketing to help maintain superior isolation.

- Are there any licensing arrangements or patent plans associated with the technology?
- OctoScope has patent-pending MIMO OTA channel emulation technology that can be integrated into the octoBox. Top
Market
- Does the product reflect a new market strategy for the company? How does this strategy relate to current corporate strategy?
- Optimizing the octoBox for the unique antenna patterns of each DUT is a natural extension of octoScope’s RF and wireless consulting services. In addition to measuring and accommodating the DUT’s 3D antenna pattern, octoScope can integrate test equipment, including multipath fading channel emulation, interference generators, RF sensors, data monitors and other instrumentation. - Who uses the product (Job title/function and industry)
- OctoBox is used by production technicians, QA test engineers, R&D test and design engineers. Top
- What are the trends in the market
- With wireless radios dropping in cost, the trend is to incorporate them into a widening range of consumer products, including phones, access points, base stations, cameras, home audio and video systems. Because these low-cost consumer devices typically have integrated antennas, they must be tested in an OTA setting. Existing isolation chambers are either too small to accommodate far-field conditions that make OTA testing repeatable or so large as to be impractical for production and burdensome for R&D. The octoBox offers OTA test stability and repeatability in an optimum formfactor that can fit into each engineer’s office. Top
Competition
- What alternatives to your product are available (Include direct and indirect competition)
- Alternatives include table-top RF enclosures designed for conducted testing or large anechoic chambers that are impractical for production and burdensome for R&D. Top
- How does your product differ from those of competitors?
- The octoBox is the first compact, self-contained RF test station that supports accurate, repeatable and highly sensitive OTA measurements. Top
- Does this product offer new capabilities to the market that were unavailable before now? Describe
- The key new capability is OTA measurement accuracy, sensitivity and repeatability in a much smaller space than is possible with current solutions. Top
