A CTO’s job is directing investment capital to optimize growth and profitability of a technology business. To set the right course, the CTO must consider
The key question is how to win in a fast moving market, given numerous challenges and constraints.
To chart the right course, the CTO should have one leg in Marketing and the other in Engineering. She must be able to:
Technologically challenging and fiercely competitive wireless communications market requires that the CTO be well versed and up to date on the industry standards, which enable millions of mobile devices to share the airwaves.
New trends favor pervasive connectivity with ever more powerful mobile devices, such as handsets and Netbooks, running data, voice and video applications. Wireless standards, such as Wi-Fi, WiMax and LTE are establishing their place in the sun and indoors. To support synchronous legacy traffic and the fast increasing multimedia traffic generated by new wireless applications, wireless backhaul networks are migrating to a standards-based architecture and may embrace MPLS and wireless meshing. The long-awaited 3G technologies, such as WCDMA/HSPA and fixed WiMax are now being deployed, while the 4G technologies, such as mobile WiMax and LTE are still emerging on the horizon.
Significant changes in the wireless communications space are in the offing. The new FCC regulations, such as White Spaces and 3650-3700 MHz contention band, pave the way for wireless devices to share the airwaves with TV broadcasts and with each other, thereby doubling or tripling the amount available bandwidth for unlicensed devices. Will these new regulations combined with open source platforms, such as the Google Android and Apple’s iPod, undermine the lucrative wireless operator business?
Changes are happening fast in the wireless world and the CTO worth her salt will be sure to maintain a broad perspective and sharp focus on the developments that matter most.
